Caldey Island is a special place. There has been a Monastery here in one shape or form since the 12th Century. Originally, it was founded as a Benedictine order. These fled as a result of the Reformation. The island had many owners until 1906 when a group of Cistercian monks bought the island and then founded the present order.
As of 2012, there are 16 Monks here, all living using the Islands resources. They are mainly a silent order, however on the rare occasions they are met, they will talk to you, although you would have to start the conversation.
